SUMMARY:January 2024 General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:We hope that you can join us to ring in the New Year with your fellow gardeners.\n– Our next GGG meeting is Thursday January 4\, 2024 beginning at 7:00pm\n– IN PERSON at the Greely Community Centre\, 1448 Meadow Drive\, Greely\n– $5.00 guest fee OR purchase your 2024 membership for $15.00\nOur Speaker for this meeting is Rob Brandon\, who has been our guest numerous times.  He will talk to us on the Wildflowers and Minoan Civilization of Crete.\n– This talk is based on a springtime two week visit to the Greek island of Crete.\n– There are 1700 species of flowers that are endemic to Crete and\, due to excellent weather\, the fields and mountain slopes had a fine display of wildflowers which will be shown in the presentation.\n– In addition\, it was a small group visit led by two archaeologists with a focus on the history of the civilizations that were established on the island.  The Minoan society\, which flourished between 2000 and 1450 BC\, was very accomplished in many art forms and advanced in its society which will be explored.\n***NOTE***\nThank you for staying at home if you feel unwell. DESCRIPTION:Well\, we’ve had quite the Summer with our weather: hot and dry\, cold and wet\, windy (very!!!)\, smoky and everything in between.  With the approach of Autumn\, let’s hope that Mother Nature calms down a bit!\n– Our next GGG meeting is Wednesday September 6\, 2023 beginning at 7:00pm\n– IN PERSON at the Greely Community Centre\, 1448 Meadow Drive\, Greely.\n– $5.00 guest fee OR purchase your 2023 memberships for $15.00\nOur guest for this meeting is Rebecca Last\, Master Gardener.\n– Her topic is “Seed Saving and Storage.”\n– Learn the basics of saving seeds\, plant genetics\, collection techniques\, storage and viability. You may even be able to breed your own varieties\, adapted specifically to growing conditions in your garden! This presentation provides an introduction to seed saving\, beginning from the premise that in today’s concentrated market for seed producers\, saving seeds is an act of quiet revolution. The differences between hybridized and open-pollinated plants are discussed. We revisit Gregor Mendel’s 19th Century experiments with peas to get a better understanding of the dominant and recessive traits for some common vegetable seeds. We will also look at seed varieties that are suitable for beginner\, intermediate and expert seed-savers. Timing and collection methods are discussed\, along with information on seed sanitation and storage.
